Robert Lewandowski’s Impact in His First Season at FC Barcelona Under Scrutiny in Spain

Robert Lewandowski’s first season at FC Barcelona has been impressive statistically, with 17 goals in 23 Liga matches and 27 goals in 35 appearances across all competitions, but the Polish striker has faced some criticism in Spain recently. [expander_maker id=”1″ ] His lack of impact in big games, such as the recent Clasico, has been pointed out by observers, leading to doubt over his real impact this season. Despite putting up good numbers, some expected more from the former Bundesliga top scorer, who had to adapt to a new environment after years at Bayern Munich and in Germany. His inefficiency in crucial matches in both La Liga and Europe has been an issue, with the Clasicos and European games particularly in the spotlight.

Lewandowski has only scored one goal in his four matches against Real Madrid this season, in the Spanish Super Cup, failing to score against them in Liga or the Copa del Rey, where Barcelona won without him in the first leg of the semi-finals (0-1) before suffering a heavy defeat in the second leg. In Europe, he did score a brace against Inter Milan (3-3), but was absent in games against Bayern Munich, Milan, and Manchester United, despite converting a penalty at Old Trafford.

According to the Madrid-based newspaper As, which excluded matches won by Barcelona with a margin of more than two goals, only three of Lewandowski’s Liga goals (against Mallorca, Valencia, and Real Betis) have brought direct points to the team this season. He has regularly taken advantage of Barcelona’s easy games against smaller teams to boost his stats, including his four goals against bottom-placed Elche in two matches (0-4 and 4-0). While Lewandowski’s talent and unique ability to score goals cannot be questioned, his crucial role in big games has been a concern for some.

Barcelona paid €45 million to acquire Lewandowski last summer, hoping to have a reliable and experienced player capable of making a difference in crucial encounters. However, he has been less effective since the return of the World Cup, and the team has struggled without players like Ousmane Dembele and Pedri, who can create opportunities for him. While Barcelona is currently leading in La Liga, Lewandowski’s impact has left something to be desired.

Despite his underwhelming performances in important games, Lewandowski still has the chance to make a difference in the remaining eleven matches of the season, especially against Atletico Madrid in late April, as Barcelona aims to secure their 27th league title. The team could also expect more from the striker next season, with the excuse of acclimation no longer valid. However, his efficiency in vital matches will be key to the club’s performance in the coming months.[/expander_maker]
