The Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation has punished Vitoria de Guimaraes and SC Braga with one match bans each following incidents between fans of both clubs during a game between the two teams on February 27th at D. Afonso Henriques.
Vitória was also fined €8,920 and Braga €10,840. The derby of Minho, won by Vitória (2-1), was marred by confrontations between the two teams in the tunnel leading to the changing rooms after incidents occurred between the fans during the match, with objects being thrown and police intervening.
Both bans are subject to appeal to the Sports Arbitration Court.
Incidents like these are not isolated, and they highlight the need for a broader approach to tackle violence in sport. This includes education and awareness-raising campaigns to promote respect, tolerance and the value of fair play. Clubs should also provide safety and security at games and take action to identify and punish individuals responsible for violent behavior.
Moreover, all stakeholders in football, including the players, coaches, referees, and fans, have a responsibility to work towards eliminating violence and promoting positive values. It is not only about punishing individuals for their actions but also about changing the culture surrounding the sport to one that is inclusive, peaceful and respectful.
Football associations and sports governing bodies must have effective regulations and sanctions in place to tackle violence and other forms of inappropriate behavior. Furthermore, they should provide support to clubs, players, and fans to adopt positive values and behaviors.[/expander_maker]
