Barcelona – The transfer of Ilkay Gundogan to FC Barcelona is official. The Spanish football champions have announced the signing of the 32-year-old German national team player. [expander_maker id=”1″ ]Gundogan is leaving Manchester City after winning the English Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League, all achieved in the same season, on a free transfer.
At FC Barcelona, Gundogan will receive a two-year contract until June 30, 2025, with an option for another season. According to the Catalan club, the release clause is set at €400 million. Gundogan joined Manchester City in the summer of 2016 from Borussia Dortmund.
Barcelona’s coach, Xavi, is said to have played a crucial role in convincing Gundogan to join the Catalan club. At Barça, Gundogan will also be reunited with his former BVB teammate, Robert Lewandowski.
Gundogan is departing his old club during the most successful phase in their history. Under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, he recently lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy as the team’s captain. “It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be part of Manchester City in recent years,” said Gundogan, expressing gratitude for the opportunity.
Guardiola had expressed his desire to see Gundogan continue wearing the light blue City jersey. The 52-year-old coach had praised Gundogan as a “fantastically clever” playmaker and commended his “incredible personality” even before the Champions League final.
The Champions League final, held in the homeland of Gundogan’s parents, was a special moment for him. Notably, he captained his team during the match. As everyone now knows, it served as the appropriate farewell gift. Gundogan had said, “Anyone who has followed my journey knows how long I have chased this title.”
Gundogan’s departure marks the end of the most successful chapter of his career so far. He joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2016. In his seven years with the Cityzens, he won the Champions League once, became a five-time league champion, and secured two FA Cup titles. It’s a record that Barcelona can only dream of to some extent.[/expander_maker]
