Italy Takes Strong Measures Against Anti-Semitism in Football

Rome – The Italian government aims to strengthen the fight against anti-Semitism in football through concrete measures.[expander_maker id=”1″ ] A declaration of intent outlining clear steps was signed at the Ministry of Interior in Rome.

The document includes the adherence to an ethical code referencing the international definition of anti-Semitism, as well as the possibility of game interruptions or even suspensions in the event of anti-Semitic incidents.

Of particular attention is the prohibition for footballers to wear the number 88 on their jerseys. The number 88 is a code used by neo-Nazi circles, symbolizing the letters HH. In the past, Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon briefly wore the number 88 during the 2000/2001 season at AC Parma. After facing criticism, he changed his jersey number. Similarly, Marco Borriello of AS Roma attracted attention in 2013 when he wore the same number, which he also subsequently changed.

Furthermore, fans will be prohibited from wearing and displaying symbols that evoke National Socialism and anti-Semitic hatred. Non-discriminatory language is also encouraged during football events. The document establishes the conditions under which “the immediate interruption of football competitions must be ordered in case of anti-Semitic chants, actions, and expressions.” [/expander_maker]
