Midfielder Paulo Bernardo, 21 years old, is currently on loan from Benfica to Celtic and is thoroughly enjoying his experience. Despite the possibility of a permanent move, Paulo remains focused on the present, prioritizing his continual improvement on the field.
Paulo Bernardo showcased his talent by scoring a goal in Celtic’s victory over Buckie Thistle in the Scottish Cup last Sunday. His performances have caught the attention of Celtic’s manager, Brendan Rodgers, who has expressed his interest in signing the young Portuguese international at the end of the season.
On loan until the end of the season, Celtic has the option to activate a buy-out clause worth approximately €7 million by June. When asked about the possibility of staying at Celtic beyond the current campaign, Paulo Bernardo stated, “I only think about the present, game by game, and how I can improve. The rest will happen.” The Benfica academy graduate is relishing his time at Celtic and has already gained the admiration and affection of the fans. “I’m enjoying it a lot. The fans are incredible and they like me, so I feel good. I just have to continue doing things well,” shared Paulo Bernardo.
Brendan Rodgers had announced prior to the cup match that he would assess the permanent signing of the Portuguese under-21 international. He explained, “I will sit down with him at the end of the season. Of course, the player must agree as well, but I can see that he is enjoying being here. I won’t disclose the value of the clause, but it’s certainly realistic. He arrived and gradually learned the principles of our game. It has been fantastic. He has a mature mind on young shoulders and is a first-class professional. I can see him growing as a person, becoming more confident with his teammates. He has been excellent, but I still expect more,” expressed Rodgers.
Paulo Bernardo confirmed that he has not yet discussed his future with the manager, but they both share the desire for things to continue going well. He believes he can further improve in the second half of the season, stating, “I need to enhance my game a lot, so I just have to keep working hard, and everything will go well. Scoring goals is also part of my job. I have to improve, score goals, and provide assists because that’s how football is nowadays.”
Having started in the last five games, Paulo Bernardo acknowledges that playing time has played a crucial role in his development and growth within the team. “Yes, it’s all about game time. I believe that now I understand things much better than in the beginning. I feel more comfortable with the team’s tactics and have a better understanding of my teammates,” said the midfielder.
As Paulo Bernardo continues to impress at Celtic, his focus remains steadfast on his performances on the pitch, allowing future opportunities to unfold naturally.
