The Cost of Cycling Tourism: Breaking Down the Numbers

Embarking on a cycling adventure, with nothing but the open road ahead and the strength of your muscles propelling you forward, may seem like a budget-friendly holiday option. However, for the 22 million French individuals who choose cycling as their preferred mode of travel during their vacations, the reality paints a different picture when it comes to the financial aspect.

According to a recent report by the Territoires et Vélos network, a collective of over 200 local authorities, the average daily expenditure of a cycle tourist stands at 68 euros, compared to 55 euros for other types of tourists, particularly those who opt for car travel. This expenditure primarily encompasses costs related to accommodation and dining, which account for 70% of the total expenses incurred by cycle tourists. Unlike motorists who may bypass frequent stops, cyclists tend to pause regularly along their journey to refuel or refresh themselves, leading to increased spending.

For enthusiasts of sports cycling, such as conquering mountain passes, the daily expenditure jumps even higher to around 80 euros. Moreover, foreign tourists tend to outspend their French counterparts, as do users of electrically assisted bicycles, a demographic often comprised of older individuals who prefer hotel accommodations, as highlighted in a study by Atout France earlier this year.

These insights have enabled Territoires et Vélos to determine that a bicycle tourist typically spends 24% more per day than a tourist traveling by car. Consequently, the economic impact of cycle tourism is projected to reach significant heights by 2024, with anticipated benefits amounting to 4.6 million euros.

As the popularity of cycling tourism continues to grow, driven by a desire for active exploration, environmental consciousness, and a deeper connection with nature, the financial implications of this trend are becoming increasingly evident. While cycling offers a unique and immersive travel experience, it also presents opportunities for local economies to thrive through increased visitor spending on accommodations, dining, and services along cycling routes.

The allure of cycling tourism lies not only in its physical and mental benefits but also in its potential to stimulate economic growth and support local businesses. As cyclists wind their way through picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and vibrant cities, they contribute to the vitality of these regions by patronizing cafes, restaurants, and accommodations, thereby fostering a cycle of economic sustainability and community development.

In light of these findings, it is clear that cycling tourism holds the promise of not only enriching the travel experiences of cyclists but also generating substantial economic returns for destinations that embrace and cater to this growing segment of travelers. By recognizing the financial impact of cycling tourism and investing in infrastructure and services that cater to cyclists’ needs, communities stand to reap the rewards of increased visitor spending, job creation, and sustainable tourism development.

As cyclists pedal their way across diverse terrains and cultures, they not only explore new horizons but also contribute to the economic vitality of destinations, forging a path towards a more inclusive, sustainable, and vibrant tourism landscape. Through the fusion of physical activity, cultural immersion, and economic empowerment, cycling tourism emerges as a powerful force for positive change, both for travelers and the communities they visit. Let’s continue pedaling towards a future where cycling tourism thrives, enriching lives, landscapes, and economies along the way.
