Kylian Mbappe, Robert Lewandowski Score Penalties As France And Poland Draw at Euro 2024

Kylian Mbappe and Robert Lewandowski traded penalties as France and Poland played out a 1-1 draw in their final group game at Euro 2024.

Mbappe, back in action after breaking his nose, converted a penalty early in the second half, but Lewandowski responded from the spot to ensure Poland salvaged a point. Despite the draw, France finished second in Group D with one win and two draws, setting up a last-16 clash against the runners-up from Group E.

Mbappe, wearing a protective mask, calmly dispatched the penalty after Ousmane Dembele was fouled in the Poland area. This goal marked Mbappe’s first at a European Championship and France’s first goal of the tournament not scored by an own goal.

Later in the game, Lewandowski, making his first start at Euro 2024 following a thigh injury, buried a penalty to level the score. His initial attempt was saved, but he got a retake due to the France goalkeeper’s early movement off the line.

The draw places France on a challenging side of the tournament bracket, alongside powerhouse teams like Portugal, Spain, and Germany. They will need to elevate their performance levels significantly to compete for the championship.

Despite being already eliminated, Poland showed resilience and pride in salvaging a draw in their final match, giving their supporters something to cheer about.

The matchup also saw notable lineup decisions, including Griezmann’s absence from France’s starting XI and the first start for Bradley Barcola. Lewandowski, on a return to his former Borussia Dortmund stomping grounds, had opportunities but couldn’t convert until the penalty opportunity arose.

Mbappe’s return energized the France attack, with his partnership with Barcola creating chances. The match showcased tactical shifts and key moments, including Mbappe’s penalty and the subsequent equalizer by Lewandowski, highlighting the drama of Euro 2024 group stage action.
