Kily González Praises Ángel Di María: A Closer Look at Argentina’s Squad Debate for Copa América

Former international forward Kily González has recently heaped praise on Ángel Di María amidst the ongoing debate surrounding Argentina’s squad selections for the Copa América. González, who closely monitors the national team under Lionel Scaloni’s tutelage, specifically highlighted the competition between Di María, whose contract with Benfica is coming to an end, and Nicolás González of Fiorentina.

In González’s view, the decision of who should start ultimately rests with Scaloni. He pointed out the uniqueness of both players, acknowledging Nicolás González’s adaptability across different positions while emphasizing Di María’s exceptional talent. “Ángel, for me, is one of the finest in the world in his position and is incomparable,” González expressed in an interview with TyCSports. He acknowledged the tough decision Scaloni faces, given Di María’s significance to the national team.

Not content with merely addressing the selection predicament, González went a step further to commend Di María, labeling him as a game-changer and asserting that he ranks among the top five players globally.

Although Di María’s future at Benfica remains uncertain as his contract approaches its conclusion, his standout performance last season with 17 goals and 13 assists in 48 matches has garnered widespread acclaim. This exceptional level of play, despite his age of 36, continues to earn him respect within Portugal and beyond.

The possibility of Di María extending his tenure at Benfica is still under consideration, a prospect that would undoubtedly please both the club’s supporters and management. His invaluable contributions on the field, blending experience, skill, and leadership, are qualities that are increasingly rare in modern football.

Scaloni’s quandary in selecting his squad highlights the impressive depth of talent within the Argentine team, particularly in attacking roles. While Nicolás González provides versatility and youth crucial for a prolonged tournament like the Copa América, Di María offers a different dynamic. His experience and ability to deliver in high-pressure situations make him an asset, unrivaled by many in the global football scene.

Di María has been a stalwart in the Argentine national team for over a decade, leaving an indelible mark with crucial goals and match-winning performances, such as his memorable goal in the Copa América final against Brazil in 2021. His track record of stepping up in crucial moments endears him not only to fans but also to teammates and former players like Kily González.

As the Copa América unfolds, Scaloni’s decisions will face scrutiny, yet having players of Di María’s and Nicolás González’s caliber represents a positive dilemma. The blend of experience and youth, consistency, and flair within the Argentine squad positions them as strong contenders for the tournament title.

Enthusiasts of Benfica and Argentine football alike eagerly await Di María’s next move, hoping for more stellar performances, whether in Lisbon or elsewhere. With his status among the footballing elite firmly established, and as underscored by Kily González, Di María stands tall as one of the premier talents in the game.
