Europa League: Lyon Stumbles against Besiktas
Despite dominating the game, Lyon failed to capitalize on their chances and suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Turkish club Besiktas Istanbul during the 3rd matchday of the Europa League. The only goal of the match was scored by Portuguese player Gedson Fernandes in the second half, set up by his compatriot Rafa Silva.
Besiktas was able to steal a win thanks to Lyon’s inefficiency and lack of clinical finishing, with Lyon having several opportunities but failing to convert. The Lyon goalkeeper, Lucas Perri, made some crucial saves, including deflecting a shot from Ciro Immobile onto the post, before eventually conceding to Fernandes.
This defeat ends Lyon’s streak of five consecutive victories in all competitions, including two in European competition, while Besiktas opens their Europa League account and places 27th, with Lyon sitting in 10th place.
The match took place amid heightened security measures due to past incidents between ultra fans of both clubs back in April 2017 during a Europa League quarter-final. Despite Lyon’s efforts to ensure safety, the match did not attract the expected 30,000 spectators.
The match saw Lyon dominate the first half with numerous shots on goal but lacking precision in the final third. Several key chances were missed, including a disallowed goal for offside and a penalty that was overturned by Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
In the second half, Lyon continued to press but failed to find the back of the net, with efforts hitting the crossbar and being cleared off the line in the dying moments of the game.
Overall, Lyon’s inability to convert their chances ultimately cost them the match against a Besiktas side that capitalized on their limited opportunities to secure the victory.
